← Acetate and Triacetate Fibres

Acetate Manufacturing Process and Chemistry

topic
Acetate production: (1) wood pulp reacted with acetic acid and acetic anhydride in presence of sulfuric acid catalyst at 30-50°C forming cellulose triacetate (DS 2.9-3.0), (2) partial hydrolysis with water/acetic acid reducing DS to 2.4-2.5 (secondary acetate), (3) dissolution in acetone forming 20-25% solution (dope), (4) filtration, (5) dry spinning through spinnerets into warm air (60-100°C) evaporating acetone, (6) acetone recovery (95-98%), (7) finishing.

Role

Esterification rather than dissolution-regeneration creates thermoplastic polymer with hydrophobic character, enabling heat-setting, pleating, and embossing unavailable in regenerated cellulose fibres.
