Alginate Fibre Processing and Limitations
topic
Processing challenges: low dry tenacity (1-2 g/den) and very low wet strength limiting traditional textile applications, solubility in alkaline solutions preventing normal washing, brittleness when dry, yellowing with age/light exposure, processing equipment corrosion from calcium chloride, and spinneret clogging from gel formation. Modified alginates (esterified, crosslinked) improve some properties with reduced biodegradability.
Role
Processing limitations confine alginate primarily to nonwoven and medical applications where high mechanical strength isn't critical, driving research into chemically modified alginates and hybrid fibres.
