Alpaca fibre is obtained from alpacas (Vicugna pacos), South American camelids domesticated from vicuñas, with two breeds: Huacaya (90%, crimpy fleece) and Suri (10%, lustrous, silky, separate locks). Global production ~7,000-8,000 tonnes annually, primarily Peru (80%), Bolivia (10%), USA-Australia (8%). Fibre diameter 18-35 μm depending on age and body location.

Role

A premium specialty fiber prized for softness, warmth (hollow fiber structure), hypoallergenic properties (no lanolin), and natural color diversity (22 natural shades) used in luxury knitwear, woven fabrics, and blends, positioning between wool and cashmere in premium natural fiber market at $8-40/kg.
