Body Scan Meditation
topic
Body scan meditation involves systematically moving attention through different body regions — from toes to crown or crown to toes — attending to physical sensations in each area with curiosity and acceptance, noticing tension, warmth, numbness, tingling, or any other quality without attempting to change it. The practice cultivates interoceptive awareness (the capacity to sense internal bodily states), develops the mind-body connection that chronic stress and cognitive overdrive erode, and systematically releases physical tension held in body areas that habitual stress postures have chronically contracted without conscious awareness.
Role
Body scan meditation addresses one of the most universal and most overlooked consequences of chronic psychological stress: the chronic tension patterns held in the body that most people carry continuously without awareness — jaw clenching, shoulder elevation, chest tightening, abdominal bracing — representing the somatic residue of the fight-or-flight preparation that was activated but never completed through physical discharge. The body scan brings these patterns into conscious awareness as the prerequisite for their release, addressing the physical embodiment of chronic stress that cognitive-level stress management techniques alone cannot reach.
