Chemistry

topic
Chemistry as creative input provides the framework for understanding how the material world is organized at the molecular level — how substances transform through reaction, how energy is stored and released in chemical bonds, how the specific properties of matter arise from the arrangement of atoms, and how the incredibly diverse phenomena of the material world (the fermentation of wine, the hardening of concrete, the colors of flowers, the photosynthesis that powers the biosphere) are all products of the same fundamental chemical principles.

Role

Chemistry is the creative input that most completely bridges the abstract and the concrete — with chemistry's molecular-level explanations of sensory experience (why bread smells as it does during baking, why vinegar tastes sour, why iron rusts) providing the specific mechanism that connects the directly experienced material world to the abstract scientific understanding of its organization. The creator who has even a basic understanding of chemistry has access to a completely different relationship with the material world — seeing every material process as the expression of molecular-level events rather than as inscrutable surface phenomenon.
