Global average cotton water footprint is 10,000 L/kg lint; rain-fed USA cotton averages 6,000 L/kg versus flood-irrigated Uzbekistan cotton at 18,000 L/kg. Drip irrigation reduces blue water consumption by 30–50% (from 8,000 to 4,000–5,500 L/kg) versus flood irrigation while maintaining or increasing yield. Deficit irrigation strategies (70–80% ETc replacement) further reduce water use 15–25% with only 5–10% yield penalty in non-stress periods. Water Stewardship certification (AWS Standard, Alliance for Water Stewardship) is adopted by 200+ cotton-producing sites. Each 1 kg cotton T-shirt contains a blue water footprint of 1,500–2,500 L in irrigation-dependent production regions.
