Synthesis Timing
Role
Most people miss their best synthesis opportunities not through lack of preparation but through poor timing — through the failure to create the protected incubation conditions in which synthesis characteristically occurs, through the failure to maintain the receptive attention that allows synthesizing insights to emerge rather than be drowned by external stimulation, and through the failure to immediately capture and develop the partial synthetic insights that arise fleetingly before the ordinary demands of attention reassert themselves. Understanding synthesis timing as a craft — knowing when to load the mind with diverse material, when to let it rest, when to be receptive to what emerges, and when to immediately develop what arrives — is the meta-cognitive skill that most directly improves synthetic creative output.
