E-Glass Fibre Composition and Properties

topic
E-glass contains approximately 54 percent silica, 14 percent alumina, 17 percent calcium oxide, and 10 percent boron trioxide, yielding filaments with tensile strength of 3.5 gigapascals, elastic modulus of 72 gigapascals, density of 2.58 grams per cubic centimetre, and service temperature up to 550 degrees Celsius with excellent electrical insulation and good acid resistance properties.

Role

Provides the workhorse glass fibre composition used in over 90 percent of glass fibre reinforced polymer applications worldwide, balancing adequate mechanical properties, electrical insulation performance, chemical resistance, and low production cost for printed circuit boards, wind turbine blades, automotive body panels, and general composite reinforcement.
