First Principles View

topic
First principles perspective taking is the creative practice of deliberately abandoning all inherited assumptions, conventional wisdom, and received categories about a domain and returning to the fundamental truths from which all other knowledge in that domain must be derived — rebuilding the understanding of a situation from its basic logical, physical, biological, or mathematical foundations rather than from the accumulated conventional wisdom that may have been appropriate for previous conditions but is constraining creative adaptation to new ones.

Role

First principles reasoning is the creative perspective-shifting method associated with the most radically transformative innovations — with Elon Musk's oft-cited application of first principles to battery cost (breaking down battery cost to its constituent raw materials rather than accepting the industry's conventional cost structure as given) producing the SpaceX and Tesla breakthroughs that seemed impossible to anyone reasoning from conventional industry assumptions. The first principles perspective is the most cognitively demanding perspective shift available — because it requires genuinely abandoning the efficient heuristics that expertise has developed rather than merely supplementing them with alternative views — but it is also the most likely to reveal the radical restructuring possibilities that incremental thinking cannot discover.
