Glass Fibre in Wind Energy
topic
Wind turbine blades (20-25% of glass fibre demand, fastest growing sector): E-glass/epoxy or polyester laminates with unidirectional roving in spar caps (primary load-bearing, 50-60% fibre volume), ±45° biaxial fabrics in shell (torsional stiffness), and core materials (balsa, PVC foam). Blade lengths: 40-115 m for 2-15 MW turbines, containing 10-50 tonnes glass fibre per blade, design life 20-25 years.
Role
Glass fibre's combination of adequate stiffness (preventing tower strikes), fatigue resistance (10⁷-10⁸ cycles), and cost-effectiveness ($2-3/kg vs. carbon $15-25/kg) makes it optimal for wind energy despite higher weight than carbon.
