Hygiene and Disposable Nonwoven Products
topic
Hygiene nonwovens are the largest segment of the medical textile market by volume, encompassing baby diapers, adult incontinence products, feminine hygiene, and disposable wipes manufactured from spunbond PP (10–25 g/m²), carded-thermal bonded PP/PE bicomponent (15–30 g/m²), hydroentangled cotton-polyester (40–80 g/m²), and airlaid cellulose-superabsorbent polymer (SAP) composites. Baby diaper construction integrates topsheet (hydrophilic spunbond PP, 18–22 g/m²), acquisition-distribution layer (ADL, carded bicomponent, 30–50 g/m²), absorbent core (fluff pulp 3–5 g + SAP 3–6 g, total absorption 200–350 mL), backsheet (PE film 18–22 g/m² or breathable SMS), and elastic leg cuffs (spandex 620–840 dtex). SAP absorption capacity of 30–50 g/g under pressure (0.3 psi, ISO 17190) achieves 99% fluid retention. Feminine hygiene products (sanitary pads, tampons) use hydroentangled cotton-viscose cover (30–50 g/m²) with chlorine-free bleached pulp absorbent core meeting Oeko-Tex Standard 100. Flushable wipes (viscose-PET hydroentangled, 55–80 g/m², dispersibility >50% after 3 drain line cycles, GD4 standard) represent a $3.2 billion market. Global hygiene nonwoven market exceeds $28 billion.
Role
Hygiene nonwovens provide essential daily skin protection and fluid management for infants, incontinent adults, and women — representing the highest-volume consumer healthcare textile product category and the largest driver of global nonwoven fibre consumption at 8–10 million tonnes/year.
