Interfacial Shear Strength Measurement Methods

topic
Single fibre pullout testing embeds a fibre length of 0.1 to 1.0 millimetres in a droplet of cured matrix resin and pulls the fibre from the matrix at controlled displacement rate, measuring peak pullout force and post-peak friction force from which interfacial shear strength and friction coefficient are calculated; microbond and fragmentation tests provide alternative approaches to interfacial property quantification in different stress state configurations.

Role

Directly measures the fibre-matrix interfacial strength that is the primary determinant of composite interlaminar shear strength and stress transfer efficiency, enabling quantitative optimisation of sizing chemistry and surface treatment parameters that govern composite mechanical performance without requiring full composite fabrication and testing for each surface treatment variant.
