Jute Mechanical Properties and Performance
topic
Jute elementary fibres exhibit tensile strength of 393-773 MPa (technical fibres: 250-450 MPa), Young's modulus of 10-30 GPa (average 26.5 GPa), elongation at break of 1.5-1.8%, specific strength of 275-515 MPa/(g/cm³), density of 1.3-1.45 g/cm³, and crystallinity index of 40-50%. Properties degrade significantly at >200°C and under 80% RH exposure.
Role
Moderate mechanical properties position jute for cost-effective applications in packaging (70% of usage), geotextiles, and low-stress composite reinforcement where affordability outweighs performance requirements.
