Linguistics is the creative input that most directly reveals the structural constraints and affordances of the medium in which most creative work occurs — language — with the linguist's understanding of metaphorical structure, grammatical framing effects, the pragmatics of implication and inference, and the cultural embeddedness of lexical meaning providing the most rigorous available tools for the deliberate use of language as a creative instrument rather than as the transparent conduit for pre-formed thoughts.
