Mohair Dyeing and Processing

topic
Dyeing: excellent affinity for acid dyes (same as wool), achieving deeper, more brilliant colors due to smooth fiber structure and high luster—50% more color depth than wool at same dye concentration. Also accepts reactive dyes, metal-complex dyes. Processing: lower felting tendency than wool (smooth scales) allows more vigorous washing but still requires anti-felting treatment (chlorination-Hercosett, enzyme, plasma) for machine washability. Finishing: mohair naturally lustrous (minimal finishing needed), optional brushing/raising for soft handle in kid mohair knitwear, and steam setting for permanent creases/pleats. Blending: typically 20-40% mohair with wool (provides luster, strength, durability to worsted suiting).

Role

Mohair's dye affinity and luster create vivid colors with depth impossible in wool, positioning mohair in premium apparel and home textiles where color intensity and visual appeal command premium, while lower felting enables easier care compared to wool though still requires shrink-resistant treatments for consumer acceptance.
