Naive Question Asking
Role
Naive questions are often the most productive creative questions precisely because expert communities have stopped asking them — with the foundational assumptions of any field being the least examined precisely because they are most universally shared, and the most consequential to challenge precisely because they structure all subsequent thinking within the field. The most transformative scientific revolutions — relativity's challenge to absolute space and time, quantum mechanics' challenge to determinism, evolution's challenge to fixed species — all began with naive questions that expert communities had declared answered or inadmissible. The creative practitioner who can ask them again with genuine curiosity rather than rhetorical provocation has the most direct access to paradigm-level creative opportunity.
