Open-Weave and Marquisette Structures
topic
Open-weave fabrics use plain weave at low sett values below the maximum packing density to create fabrics with defined open spaces between threads for filter fabrics, thermal insulation nets, and open curtain sheers, with marquisette using a fine leno or plain weave at very low sett in fine denier filament yarn to produce the transparent, stable mesh of sheer curtain fabric, where the balance between openness and thread stability determines the filtering or transparency performance.
Role
Provides the structural framework for permeable and transparent textile products where the degree of openness is the primary design parameter, with the challenge being to maintain thread position stability at low sett values where thread slippage would destroy the regular mesh geometry that functional performance depends on, requiring either leno twisting for thread fixation or thread coating and bonding to stabilise open plain weave constructions.
