Gripping Elements (Plucking Springs)
topic
Plucking springs consist of two spring systems facing each other like tongs, dropped into feed material, closed, and lifted to grasp material like fingers. This is the most gentle of all methods of opening but produces mostly large to very large clumps of uneven size. Used by former Schubert & Salzer and Trützschler, this type of opening device is no longer used.
Role
Plucking springs represent an extreme on the gentleness spectrum but failed commercially due to poor opening uniformity. They illustrate the fundamental trade-off between gentle treatment and effective opening that drives all blowroom machine design.
