Cross-Domain Conversations

topic
Outside-domain conversations are the deliberate cultivation of substantive intellectual exchange with practitioners in radically different fields — not casual social conversation but the serious engagement with how people in different disciplines understand, frame, and solve the problems of their domain, producing the specific cross-domain insight that only genuine intellectual engagement with a different field's practitioner provides.

Role

The most productive creative conversations are the most cross-domain ones — because the person from a different field asks the question so fundamental that practitioners in the field stopped asking it years ago, identifies the assumption so embedded in the field's thinking that its practitioners experience it as reality rather than as assumption, and imports the frame from their own domain that reveals the problem from an angle the field has never considered. Most creative practitioners' intellectual conversations are confined to their professional communities — missing the specific creative input of the genuine outsider's perspective.
