Pilling and Surface Appearance Grading

topic
Pilling appearance grading uses ISO photographic reference standards with grades 1 to 5 representing very severe to no pilling respectively, with trained graders viewing specimens under defined D65 illuminant at 45 degree illumination angle and 90 degree viewing angle; image analysis software provides objective pilling grade measurement from digitised specimen images calibrated against photographic reference standards.

Role

Provides the standardised visual appearance grading system for pilled fabric specimens from Martindale, ICI, and random tumble pilling tests, enabling consistent test result reporting across laboratories and inspectors and providing the pilling grade data used in material specifications, supplier approval decisions, and consumer complaint investigation.
