Pilling Resistance Evaluation of Knitted Fabrics

topic
Pilling resistance of knitted fabrics is evaluated by the Martindale abrasion pilling method per ISO 12945-2 or the ICI pilling box method per ISO 12945-1, subjecting fabric specimens to defined cycles of random rubbing abrasion and comparing the resulting surface pill density and size against reference photographs to assign a grade from 1 (severe pilling) to 5 (no pilling) that predicts consumer appearance retention during wear.

Role

Predicts the surface appearance durability of knitted fabrics during consumer wear by quantifying the tendency to form surface pills from fibre entanglement that is a primary consumer quality complaint in knitted garments, enabling fabric specification setting based on pilling grade requirements for each application and guiding yarn selection and fabric finishing decisions that improve pilling resistance.
