Random Forced Connection

topic
Random forced connection is the deliberate creative technique of artificially requiring the combination of a current problem or creative challenge with a randomly selected, entirely unrelated concept, image, word, or domain — forcing the creative mind to find a connection between what seems unrelatable and thereby discovering novel solution paths that deliberate, goal-directed thinking would never have generated.

Role

Random forced connection is one of the most reliably productive creativity techniques precisely because it overrides the conceptual limitation of deliberate thinking — which systematically generates the most available, most familiar, and most obvious associations rather than the most remote and potentially most original ones. The creative practitioner who takes a product design problem and forces a connection with 'ocean floor geology,' or takes a communication challenge and forces a connection with 'fungal mycelium networks,' is not being whimsical — they are exploiting the mind's capacity to find meaning in apparently arbitrary juxtapositions, which is the same capacity that produces the unexpected insights of dream logic, poetic metaphor, and scientific analogy.
