Fine Count Shirting Yarns

topic
Fine shirting yarns (Ne 80–160 combed Egyptian or Pima cotton, ELS grade, micronaire 3.0–3.8) require: very close roller settings (front-to-middle: UHML + 4 mm), high TM 5.0–6.0, very low spindle speed (12,000–16,000 RPM to control balloon), ring diameter 38–42 mm (small cop), and premium travellers (lightest available weight, ceramic ring). CVm% target <9% (Uster 5th percentile), IPI total <20/1000m. Production speed: 8–12 m/min delivery. Yarn cost: $8–25/kg.

Role

Fine count shirting yarn represents the pinnacle of ring spinning technical capability. The ability to spin Ne 100+ yarn consistently within Uster 5th percentile specifications is a competitive differentiator that only 5–10% of global mills can achieve. Understanding the process adaptations required — and the raw material quality required (ELS cotton, UHML >36 mm) — defines the technical boundary of ring spinning capability and the pathway to premium market access.
