Greige Yarn Testing vs Finished Yarn Testing

topic
Greige (grey) yarn testing at the ring frame output provides the earliest quality feedback but does not account for changes introduced in winding, sizing, and finishing. Finished yarn (cone/cheeses after winding and lubrication) is the commercial product tested against specifications. Key differences: winding introduces stretch (reduces elongation by 0.5–1%), lubricant adds weight (increases count by 0.3–0.8%), and autoclave steaming sets twist (reduces liveliness). Both testing points are needed for complete process control.

Role

Understanding the difference between greige and finished yarn test values is essential for setting ring frame process targets that consistently produce finished yarn within specification. Mills that only test finished yarn discover ring frame problems late; mills that only test greige yarn miss winding-introduced defects. Designing a two-point testing programme is a quality system design decision that reflects sophisticated process understanding.
