Routine, Advanced, and Specialised Inspections
topic
NFPA 1851 defines three inspection levels with routine inspection by the firefighter before and after each use checking for visible damage, soiling, and closure function, advanced inspection by a trained inspector at least annually examining all elements of the garment including moisture barrier integrity by hydrostatic testing, seam condition, retroreflective trim performance, and thermal liner condition, and specialised inspection by the manufacturer or certified inspector using advanced techniques when damage or performance questions arise.
Role
Establishes the tiered inspection framework that systematically identifies clothing performance degradation at multiple intervals and inspection depths, with routine user inspection providing the most frequent defect detection for obvious damage and advanced annual inspection providing the comprehensive assessment of less visible degradation including moisture barrier failure and thermal liner compaction that would not be detected by visual observation alone.
