Scale perspective shifting is the creative practice of examining the same phenomenon at radically different levels of analysis — from the molecular to the cellular to the organismal to the ecological to the evolutionary in biology, from the individual to the team to the organization to the industry to the economy to the civilization in social science — with each level of analysis revealing properties and dynamics that are invisible at all other levels and that must be integrated into a complete understanding.

Scale perspective shifting is the creative capacity that most directly addresses the limitation of single-level analysis — because the most consequential properties of complex systems are frequently emergent properties visible only at levels of organization above the level at which analysis is conducted, making the single-scale analyst systematically blind to the phenomena that matter most. The biologist who can shift perspective from molecular mechanism to organism-level behavior to ecological relationship to evolutionary pattern has access to the explanatory resources of all four levels simultaneously — enabling the multi-level causal accounts that single-scale analysis cannot provide.
