Silver-Zeolite Antimicrobial Treatment
topic
Silver-zeolite systems immobilize Ag⁺ ions within aluminosilicate zeolite crystal lattices (pore size 4–10 Å) via ion exchange at silver loadings of 2–5% w/w, enabling controlled sustained release of 0.01–0.1 ppm Ag⁺ over 50–100 wash cycles. Applied to textiles via padding (5–15 g/m² zeolite add-on) with polyurethane or acrylic binder, cured at 150°C. Bacteriostatic activity (>3 log reduction, AATCC TM100) persists through 50 industrial wash cycles at 75°C. Unlike free AgNPs, zeolite-immobilized silver has negligible environmental release, meeting ZDHC MRSL compliance. Products marketed under Agion and Zeomic brands are FDA-cleared for medical textile applications.
Role
Provides durable, controlled-release silver antimicrobial activity with superior wash fastness and reduced environmental silver discharge compared to free nanoparticle systems, preferred for medical and food-contact textile applications.
