Depth + Breadth Balance (T-Shaped Knowledge)
Role
Pure breadth without depth produces the 'interesting dinner party guest' — someone who knows a little about everything and masters nothing, whose cross-domain observations are intriguing but lack the precision and rigor that comes from genuine deep knowledge. Pure depth without breadth produces the specialist who solves the same category of problem brilliantly but cannot see beyond the boundaries of their discipline. The T-shape is not a compromise between these failure modes — it is the synthesis that captures the advantages of both. Yet most people default to one extreme or the other: the educational system pushes for depth, the internet age rewards breadth, and the deliberate cultivation of both simultaneously is rare because it requires resisting both pressures.
