Theory-practice connection is the interdisciplinary bridging capacity that links the abstract, generalizing knowledge of theoretical disciplines with the concrete, contextual knowledge of practical disciplines — translating between the formally stated generalizations of academic research and the tacitly held, situation-specific knowledge of practitioners, in both directions: enriching practice with theory's systematic generalizations and enriching theory with practice's anomalous particularities.
Role
The theory-practice divide is the most persistent and most consequential form of disciplinary disconnection — producing academic research that is theoretically rigorous but practically irrelevant and professional practice that is experientially deep but theoretically naive, when the most productive contributions to any field come from the boundary between the two. The design practitioner who understands psychological research, the teacher who understands learning science, the engineer who understands materials physics, and the clinician who understands cellular biology are all bridging the theory-practice divide in ways that produce better work than either pure theorizing or pure practitioning can achieve.
