Vocabulary Translation

topic
Vocabulary translation is the creative capacity to recognize when different disciplines are using entirely different terminology to describe the same underlying phenomenon, and to construct the translation between their respective vocabularies that reveals the common subject matter beneath the different disciplinary languages — recognizing that 'affordances' in ecological psychology and 'use cases' in software design and 'call-to-action' in marketing are all addressing the same fundamental question of how environmental features invite specific behavioral responses.

Role

Vocabulary translation is the interdisciplinary bridging skill that most immediately enables productive dialogue between disciplinary practitioners who would otherwise talk past each other — because the same phenomenon described in different disciplinary vocabularies appears to be different phenomena until the translator reveals the structural correspondence beneath the surface linguistic difference. The person who can perform vocabulary translation across disciplinary boundaries is the most immediately valuable collaborator in any interdisciplinary team — because they enable the effective communication without which the productive combination of disciplinary knowledge is impossible.
