UHMWPE in Ballistic Protection

topic
Body armor (40-50% of UHMWPE use): UD (unidirectional) laminates of UHMWPE film or tape with resin (25-30 layers for NIJ IIIA, 0.5-1.0 kg/m²), hard armor plates (UHMWPE composites with ceramics for rifle threats), and flexible soft armor. Advantages over aramid: 15-20% lighter for same protection level, higher multi-hit performance, no strength degradation over time, buoyant (floats). Energy absorption: 50-100 J/g·m².

Role

UHMWPE is displacing aramid in body armor (60% of US military armor now UHMWPE-based) due to superior specific performance enabling lighter armor critical for soldier mobility, with 25-30% weight reduction improving endurance and reducing musculoskeletal injuries.
