UHMWPE composites: UD (unidirectional) tape or film laminates with thermoplastic matrices (PE, PP, PU) or thermoset resins achieving tensile strength 1500-2500 MPa and modulus 60-100 GPa at fibre volumes 70-80%. Applications beyond armor: blast protection, vehicle armor, helmets, maritime patrol vessels, and sports protection. Processing challenges: low surface energy (requires plasma/chemical treatment), low melting point (consolidation <145°C), and poor compressive properties.
Role
UHMWPE composites occupy niche requiring maximum specific tensile strength and impact resistance at low operating temperatures (<100°C), complementing carbon (high stiffness) and aramid (thermal resistance) in composite materials portfolio.
