UHMWPE in Medical Implants
topic
Orthopedic implants: cross-linked UHMWPE (irradiation at 50-100 kGy creating intermolecular bonds) for artificial joint components (hip acetabular cups, knee tibial inserts) providing wear resistance, biocompatibility, and 40-60% reduced wear vs. conventional UHMWPE. Over 1.5 million UHMWPE implants annually worldwide. Also used in sutures (Dyneema Purity—ultra-strong, minimal tissue reaction) and ligament reconstruction.
Role
UHMWPE's biocompatibility, wear resistance, and mechanical properties make it the material of choice for bearing surfaces in total joint replacements, with highly cross-linked grades extending implant longevity from 10-15 to 20-25+ years reducing revision surgeries.
