Writing as Synthesis
Role
Writing as synthesis is the creative practice that most reliably reveals the difference between thinking one understands something and actually understanding it — because the attempt to write a clear explanation of a complex multi-domain understanding inevitably encounters the unresolved contradictions, unexplained gaps, and implicit assumptions that reading and thinking have left unexamined. This is why scientists who are required to write up their findings frequently make new discoveries in the writing process itself — the discipline of explicit articulation revealing the connections and conclusions that more informal thinking had not reached. Most people's synthetic thinking remains vague and partially formed precisely because they never subject it to the clarifying discipline of writing.
