Aramid Fibre Composites

topic
Aramid-epoxy composites (55-65% fibre volume): tensile strength 1200-1400 MPa, modulus 60-80 GPa, density 1.38 g/cm³, impact resistance 2-3× carbon fibre, but 60% lower compressive strength (200-300 MPa). Applications: aircraft interior panels (low smoke/toxicity), radomes (electromagnetic transparency), sporting goods (canoes, skis), pressure vessels, and ballistic panels. Processing via prepreg, wet layup, RTM.

Role

Aramid composites combine high specific tensile properties with excellent impact and damage tolerance for applications where toughness outweighs compressive strength requirements, complementing carbon composites in aerospace secondary structures.
