Two material-forwarding rollers, one movable relative to the other, measure sliver volume through their relative displacement. Rollers can be smooth or grooved (the latter prevents lateral fibre escape for more precise measurement but risks fibre crushing at edges). The advantage is insensitivity to variations in raw material characteristics (except possibly bulk).
Role
Mechanical measurement is the most common system for deriving measured values in card autoleveling. Its robustness against material variations makes it suitable for mills processing diverse raw materials. Rieter uses pairs of disc rollers scanning the sliver cross-section.
