Carding Technology

sub-area
The card is the central machine in short-staple spinning, opening tufts to individual fibres, eliminating 80–95% of remaining impurities, removing dust, disentangling neps, eliminating some short fibres, blending fibres, creating partial longitudinal orientation, and forming sliver (typically 4–7 ktex). Production rates have increased from 5 kg/h (1965) to about 220 kg/h for the latest generation, such as the Rieter C 60 with 1,500 mm working width.

Role

The card shows the highest correlation to both quality and productivity of any spinning machine. Two industry maxims capture its importance: 'The card is the heart of the spinning mill' and 'Well carded is half spun.' Cards and blowroom now form an integral, inseparable unit coordinated to complement one another.
