Active Pneumatic Measuring System

topic
A convergent funnel before calender rollers generates air pressure exceeding atmospheric as fibre material squeezes out entrained air. At constant sliver speed and fibre characteristics, this pressure is proportional to volume. A lateral bore transmits pressure to a pneumatic-electrical transducer using electrical induction. The advantage is simplicity with no moving parts; the disadvantage is sensitivity to fibre count variations.

Role

Active pneumatic measurement was pioneered by Zellweger and provides a cost-effective approach to sliver count sensing. Its susceptibility to fibre count variation means it works best when processing consistent raw material.
