Revolving Flats: Function and Design

topic
Flats comprise 80–116 individual bars (Rieter 79) with 27–46 in the carding position, moving on an endless path. Bars are approximately 32–35 mm wide with clothing strips about 22 mm wide (gaps exist between strips). Flat bars have slightly inclined slide surfaces so the leading edge is spaced further from the cylinder than the trailing edge, allowing fibres to pass underneath. Backward flat movement (against cylinder direction) provides technological advantages.

Role

Together with the cylinder, the flats form the main carding zone responsible for opening tufts into individual fibres, eliminating remaining impurities, removing short fibres, untangling neps, removing dust, and creating longitudinal fibre orientation. Backward movement directs clean flats to the material entry point and removes filled flats immediately.
