Short Fibre Elimination by Flats

topic
Short fibres can only be eliminated if pressed into and retained in flexible or semi-rigid clothing (not metallic). Long fibres have more contact with cylinder clothing and are caught and carried along; short fibres offer less surface, remain caught in flat clothing, and leave as flat strippings. The card eliminates 1–2% flat strippings with approximately half being short fibres, so fewer than 1% short fibres are actually removed—scarcely noticeable in staple measurements.

Role

Despite the limited quantity, short fibre elimination by flats is one of the few points in the spinning process where short fibres can be selectively removed. Widening the flat waste blade spacing increases long fibre loss more than short fibre elimination, making it an inappropriate tool for short fibre control.
