Direct Gravure Coating Roll Design
topic
Direct gravure coating rolls use chrome-plated steel cylinders with engraved cell patterns of pyramid, hexagonal, or channel geometry at cell volumes of 2 to 40 cubic centimetres per square metre, with cell count of 20 to 200 lines per centimetre and cell depth of 20 to 200 micrometres determining the coating weight transferred at each revolution, with doctor blade scraping excess compound from the roll surface before the nip with the substrate where cell contents transfer by capillary and adhesion forces.
Role
Enables precise and reproducible thin coating weight application through the volumetric metering principle of defined cell volume that transfers a controlled compound quantity per unit area independent of compound viscosity within the working range, with gravure cell geometry being the primary design parameter that determines the coating weight and its uniformity across the full substrate width for each coating roll.
