Electron Beam Curing for High-Performance Coatings
topic
Electron beam curing uses high-energy electrons at 150 to 300 keV accelerated from a linear cathode source to penetrate and cure radiation-reactive coatings to depths of 0.5 to 5 millimetres through direct ionisation without requiring photoinitiators, enabling curing of thick pigmented coatings that UV cannot penetrate and producing crosslinked polymer networks with higher molecular weight and performance than UV or thermal alternatives for premium release coating, adhesive, and wood coating applications.
Role
Provides the highest crosslink density and deepest cure penetration of any radiation curing technology for thick pigmented and opaque coatings that cannot be UV-cured from insufficient UV penetration depth, with EB curing enabling 100 percent solid, VOC-free production of high-performance release coatings and adhesives whose crosslink density and chemical resistance cannot be achieved by UV or thermal cure at equivalent production speeds.
