Geometric Dobby Patterns and Texture Weaves

topic
Dobby geometric patterns include stepped diagonal twill derivatives, diamond and lozenge motifs from reversing twill, honeycomb and waffle textures from reversing rib weaves, spot and dot weaves with small isolated floats on a ground, and crepe weaves with scattered irregular binding points, all achievable within the 12 to 24 shaft capability of standard dobby looms that can execute pattern repeats of up to 24 ends in width limited by shaft count.

Role

Defines the design space available within dobby weaving technology, with the shaft count limitation creating the boundary between dobby-achievable patterns and Jacquard-required designs, and with geometric patterns whose repeat width does not exceed shaft count being the natural domain of dobby weaving that produces the textured suiting, shirting, and furnishing fabrics constituting the majority of commercial dobby production.
