Grinding Depth and Tooth Point Quality

topic
Grinding is performed with the cylinder rotating normally so the grinding roller moves with (not against) the teeth. Correct grinding produces a plane surface with a sharp edge at the tooth point. Too little grinding leaves a rounded front edge (poor carding); too much pressure creates a burr at the tooth edge (damaging). The doffer sometimes needs burnishing if teeth were over-ground, performed in the direction of teeth (not against).

Role

Correct grinding technique is critical—improper grinding can damage clothing irreversibly. The distinction between correct, insufficient, and excessive grinding must be understood by all maintenance personnel. Metallic clothing should not be cleaned with revolving brushes as metal-to-metal friction causes more wear than fibre processing.
