Grinding Tools: Full-Width Roller vs Traversing Disc
topic
Full-width grinding rollers use carborundum abrasive (Al₂O₃) coating on drums driven externally or internally, treating the full clothing width simultaneously. Risk of drum bending in the middle is minimal with modern designs. Traversing grinding discs (90 mm wide abrasive disc) slide on a guide tube driven by worm spindle or belts, treating only a small portion at a time but with practically no bending risk. Traversing takes far longer.
Role
Full-width rollers are preferred for production grinding due to speed, while traversing discs provide superior uniformity across the machine width. Modern full-width rollers have largely eliminated the historical bending concern.
