← PET Polymer Chemistry and Synthesis

Bio-Based and Biodegradable Polyesters

topic
Bio-PET uses bio-based monoethylene glycol (from bioethanol, 30% bio-content) with petrochemical TPA. 100% bio-based PTT uses bio-1,3-propanediol (PDO from corn glucose via DuPont Tate & Lyle fermentation). PLA (polylactic acid) from corn starch is melt-spun but has Tg ~57°C limiting heat resistance. PEF (polyethylene furanoate) from bio-based FDCA offers superior barrier and mechanical properties.

Role

Bio-based and biodegradable polyester alternatives are critical research frontiers addressing petrochemical dependency and end-of-life pollution of synthetic textiles. Understanding their chemistry and property trade-offs is central to sustainable textile engineering.
