Single Fibre Tensile Testing

topic
Single fibre tensile test (ISO 5079, ASTM D3822): gauge length 20 mm, extension rate 20 mm/min (or constant rate of extension), humidity 65% RH, 20°C. Load cell resolution ≤0.1 mN. Calculated: tenacity (cN/dtex = force/linear density), elongation at break (%), initial modulus (cN/dtex), work of rupture (mJ/mg). Statistical analysis: Weibull distribution of break strength (shape parameter m indicates variability). At least 30 specimens for reliable statistics.

Role

Single fibre tensile testing is the most direct and informative mechanical test for fibre characterisation. Understanding its methodology, statistical interpretation (Weibull analysis), and sources of variability is fundamental to fibre materials science research methodology.
