Softening Agents and Handle Modification

topic
Softening agents lubricate fibre–fibre interfaces and alter surface tactile perception. Types: cationic softeners (dialkyl dimethyl ammonium salts, excellent soft feel, moderate durability, but affinity for anionic dyes causing shade change); silicone softeners (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS — amino-modified for substantivity, excellent soft feel, 50+ wash durability); hydrophilic softeners (polyether-modified silicone — maintains moisture management while softening). Applied by exhaustion or padding (5–20 g/L). Handle measurement by KES-F (Kawabata evaluation system) or FAST.

Role

Fabric handle is the primary sensory quality attribute in apparel. Understanding softener chemistry and mechanism — including the trade-off between softness, durability, and other functional properties — is essential in textile finishing.
