PTFE Architectural Membrane Coating

topic
PTFE architectural membranes coat woven fiberglass substrates (style 7628 or similar, 200–800 g/m²) with aqueous PTFE dispersion in 8–12 dip-and-squeeze passes, sintering at 360–380°C between passes to achieve total PTFE add-on of 800–1,500 g/m². Final membrane weight is 1,000–2,500 g/m² with tensile strength of 4,000–8,000 N/5cm and light transmission of 10–20%. Service life exceeds 30 years with self-cleaning properties due to surface energy below 20 mN/m. Used in airport terminals, stadiums, and exposition halls; installed cost is $150–400/m². Major producers include Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics and Chemours.

Role

Enables long-span, lightweight roof structures for major public buildings and sports venues, providing permanent, maintenance-free architectural fabric solutions with fire resistance class B1 and high aesthetic translucency.
