Anti-Balloon Rings
topic
Anti-balloon rings (also called separators) are fixed rings mounted on the lappet bar at 1/3 and 2/3 of the bobbin height, reducing balloon diameter and tension variation across the cop build. Without them, balloon diameter varies from large (empty bobbin, low yarn level) to small (full cop, high level), causing tension variation and uneven winding density. Ring diameter is 1.5–2× the ring flange diameter.
Role
Anti-balloon rings are essential for maintaining consistent yarn tension throughout the cop build cycle, which runs for 20–45 minutes depending on spindle speed and yarn count. Without them, the tension variation across the build causes winding density differences that affect dye uptake — creating shading differences between bobbin base and tip layers that show as rings in knitted fabric.
